Our Journey – Thaba Chweu

The Thaba Chweu Local Municipality is a Category B municipality located in the north-western region of the Mpumalanga Province in the Ehlanzeni District. It is one of four municipalities in the district. It came into being after the December 5th 2000 local government elections.

The escarpment divides the district into eastern and western halves. The western half (Lydenburg district) is dominated by agricultural and farming activities, while forestry is the main economic activity of the eastern half (Sabie/Graskop district). Thaba Chweu is one of the major tourist attraction areas in South Africa. Mashishing (previously Lydenburg) is the oldest town in the province, and a hub of heritage where the famous Lydenburg Heads, which are said to date back to 400AD, were found in the 1950s. Also found here are old stone houses. Most of all, this is the home of trout fishing. Graskop is home to the Three Rondavels, The Blyde Canyon, Potholes, God’s Window, The Pinnacle, Berlin, Lisbon, and Graskop Falls, all of which are World Heritage Sites, and form the Panorama Route. In the Sabie area, when travelling east of Mashishing through the Long Tom Pass, there are hectares of pine plantations. These mountains are part of the Drakensberg Mountain Range.
"Thaba Chweu Local Municipality (TCLM) is the second smallest municipality in the district of Ehlanzeni municipality. The municipality consists of three main tows namely: Lydenburg, Sabie and Graskop which are characterized by formal and informal settlements comprises of different community groups with different developmental challenges such as water supply, electricity supply, human settlement development, tourism development and socio-economic up-liftment. The municipal plans have revealed that this municipality has the greatest economic potential opportunities in mining, tourism and forestry in which the municipality is developing appropriate strategies and plans to address some of the challenges."

Mayor Fridah Nkadimeng

MayorHer political involvement has seen her elected as the Secretary of the ANCWL and won the Charlotte Maxeke Award as the branch which did well amongst all the 9 provinces in South Africa. She was also the Secretary of the ANC for consecutive years until 2014. Cllr Nkadimeng led the branch with passion and integrity and it was doing very well. She was also elected as the ANCWL Chairperson of the Region a position she holds to date. In 2014 she was deployed by the ANC as the Member of Parliament and served in the Communications, Higher Education and Human Settlement portfolios. Until she was promoted as the Chief Whip of the portfolio committee of Human Settlement. Together with the Chairperson they led the delegation to Singapore to benchmark on Human Settlement.

Municipal Manager Ms Sphiwe Matsi

MMMs Sphiwe Matsi has been appointed Municipal Manager of Thaba Chweu Local Municipality effectively from 01 February 2020. Her appointment was confirmed during the Special Council meeting held on Thursday, 30 January 2020. She has been acting in the position since July 2018. Her appointment is historic in that she’s the first female to be appointed as the Head of Administration since the transition to democracy. Before acting in the position, Ms. Matsi worked as the Director of Community Services since April 2015.The referred senior official grew up from the hills of Mashishing well known with a tranquil character. She is also referred to as focused, firm, visionary and result oriented; qualities that are essential towards turning TCLM around. Her illustrious career spans over 16 years with various stints as a Social Worker in departments such as Correctional Services, Actonville Child and Family Welfare Society, Limpopo Department of Health and Social Development and Mpumalanga Department of Social Development.
